The Cubs significantly bolstered its pitching staff in February with the signing of free agent starting pitcher Yu Darvish. The Los Angeles Dodgers, for which Darvish pitched in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series, were rumored to be interested in re-signing the 31-year-old native of Japan, but were unable to match the Cubs offer of six years and $126 million. Despite recording only five outs in both of his two starts in the World Series, Darvish was an effective pitcher in the regular season as he posted a win-loss record of 10-12 to go along with a 3.86 earned run average (ERA) and recorded 209 strikeouts in 186 and two-thirds innings.

Darvish made his MLB debut in 2012 as a member of the Texas Rangers and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting and ninth in Cy Young voting that season. He's a four-time All-Star with a career record of 56-42 as well as an ERA of 3.42 and an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.33.
